Quick Math Example Using Google Earth
Skills Targeted: Ratios, Areas, Volume.
Go to view of the K-Rock Center (or other very large building) and zoom in enough to see cars, as well as building. An average car is 4.5m in length and 1.8m in width. Now you have a scale to work with. You can assign any number of questions: area of building, area of sidewalk around building, how much cement do you need to make the sidewalks, etc. Students can attack the problem in many ways. Then they can share their approaches with the class, perhaps in a bansho. Be creative.
For volume, they need a third dimension. Switching to Google Street View and the same location, they should be able to use the same skills to estimate the height of the building.
